Joice Hammer, 87, of Arlington, passed away on Wednesday, August 11, 2021, at the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, August 22, 2021, at 2:00 P.M. at the Lake Campbell Lutheran Church in rural Volga, SD. The service will be live-streamed on the Lake Campbell Lutheran Church Facebook page. Interment will immediately follow the service at Lake Campbell Lutheran Cemetery. A time of fellowship will follow burial at 3:00 P.M. at the Lake Campbell Lutheran Church. Visitation will be held one hour prior, beginning at 1:00 P.M. at the church. Eidsness Funeral Home is assisting the Hammer family with arrangements.
Joice Elaine Hammer was born on April 8, 1934, at Canton, Ohio to Elmer and Anna (Erickson) Tubbs. Following her birth, the family moved to Minneapolis, MN, where Joice graduated from Vocational High School.
On March 13, 1954, Joice was united in marriage to Dean Hammer in Wentworth, SD. Following their marriage, they resided in Minneapolis, Crystal, and Anoka, Minnesota, raising their three children. The couple later moved to the Brookings area in 1993, settling in Arlington. Joice held many jobs throughout her life, including acting as a cook at the Arlington Care Center, in food service at Aramark at SDSU, and retiring from Marriott Food Services at USD. Even following her retirement, Joice continued to work at Park Place Assisted Living in Brookings, officially retiring at the age of 78.
Joice enjoyed spending time at home with her dog, watching various television programs and shopping. Joice was known to be a very warm-hearted and giving mother and grandmother. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family.
Joice is survived by her daughters, Deb (Gary) Bakken, of Volga, SD, and Vikki (Floyd) Maas, of Watertown, SD; grandchildren: Mandy (Joe) Verhulst, Kelly (Chelsie) Bakken, Jaime (Angela) Ness, and Kyle (Jennica) Ness; great-grandchildren: Shanna, Ayden, Caleb, Brylen, London, Lincoln, and Carolyn.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Dean; son, Bruce; numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; and her parents.
