Obituary

John Myers, age 83, passed away on Monday, April 6, 2026, at the Brookings Hospital due to health complications. A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm with a time of sharing stories starting at 6:30 pm at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings, SD.

John Raymond Myers Jr. was born on November 20, 1942, in Toledo, OH, the son of John Sr. and Rosetta (Mitchell) Myers. He grew up in Fremont, OH, attending and graduating from Fremont Ross High School, class of 1960. In high school, he lettered, swimming for the “Little Giants” Fremont Ross High School Swim Team. Earlier in John’s life, he was an Eagle Scout. After high school, John went on to Ohio University where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in 1964 in Mechanical Engineering. Following college, John moved to Texas where he began his job as a manufacturing engineer, working for Owens Corning Fiberglass. John met a secretary at Owens Corning Fiberglass, the love of his life, Mayann Wright. The two were united in marriage on March 25, 1967.

In 1982, the couple moved to Iowa, where John started to work for Larson Manufacturing as a plant manager. In 1993, John and Mayann moved to Brookings where he continued to work for Larson’s until his retirement in 2008. They were able to enjoy their retirement together and started to travel more. Most importantly, John was able to focus more on his family, especially his grandchildren.

John enjoyed a wide variety of hobbies throughout his life. He loved golfing, watching his Dallas Cowboys, grilling while enjoying a glass of chardonnay, building model boats, doing yard work, and most of all, working on his Corvette. John was a proud member of the NCRS, a long-time member of the Brookings Country Club, and earlier in life, a member of the Methodist Church.

John and Mayann enjoyed hosting friends and family and spending time with those closest to them. John could often be found in the garage “tinkering around,” always keeping himself busy. Earlier in life, he was rarely seen without his pipe. He was also well known for making a great Bloody Mary.

John will be remembered for his kindness, quick wit, and sarcastic sense of humor. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. John will also be remembered for being ‘a sharp dressed man’ and well put together, no matter the occasion.

John is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mayann Myers; four children, Jason (Jocelyn) Myers, Mandy Myers, Nicholas (Cassie) Myers and Erin Myers; many grandchildren, Mia Myers (Dillon), Isabel (Alex) Schley, Arianna Myers (Parker), Jae-Lynn Stulken, Tehya Myers, Emy Myers, Andrew Hegg, Tyler Hegg, Mira Hegg, Miles Myers and Rylee Myers; great-grandchildren, Lydia Schmidt, Vera Jo Schmidt and Cohen Phillips; his siblings, Diane Nye and Tom (Kathy) Myers and many nieces nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Sr. and Rosetta (Mitchell) Myers.
