Johanna Jo Volkers, age 88, of rural Brookings, died Saturday, November 6, 2010, surrounded by her loving family at Dakota Sun Assisted Living in Volga. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Thursday, November 11, 2010, at the Christian Reformed Church in Volga. Interment will be at Trinity Cemetery in Volga. Visitations will be from 5-8 P.M. Wednesday, November 10, at the Eidsness Funeral Chapel in Volga.
Johanna Dorothy (Walburg) Volkers was born October 1, 1922, in Deuel County, South Dakota, to Jacob and Minnie (Tekrony) Walburg. She grew up in the Bemis-Castlewood area. Jo attended Hamlin 4 County School. On June 1, 1948, she married Bert Volkers at Bemis, South Dakota. The Volkers then made their home on the Volkers family homestead of rural Brookings where they lived and raised their family. Bert died September 18, 2001.
Jo was a member of the Volga Christian Reformed Church , Dorcas Ladies Aid, and the Volga Christian School Society. She enjoyed quilting, cake decorating, writing letters, and especially spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include seven children: Henrietta (Bill) Wilson of Everett, Washington, Alice (Don) Glirbas of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Albert Volkers of St. Paul, Minnesota, Joyce (Marvin) Post of Volga, Frances (Rick) Nelsen of Colman, South Dakota, Jake (Roberta) Volkers of Brookings, and Burton (June) Volkers of Blue Springs, Missouri; 19 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; two brothers: Bernard (May) Walburg of Sioux Center, Iowa and Myron (Kay) Walburg of Holland, Michigan; four sisters-in-law: Gladys Walburg of Watertown, South Dakota, Ady Walburg of Brookings, Alice Volkers and Henrietta Volkers both of Volga; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; an infant daughter, JoAnn; a grandson, Bryan; and three brothers: Ted, Henry, and Ray Walburg.
