Johanna Santema died Monday, November 17, 2003, at Brookview Manor in Brookings. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Thursday, November 20, 2003, at First Reformed Church of Volga with interment in Trinity Cemetery. Visitations will be from 4-8 P.M. Wednesday at Eidsness Funeral Chapel in Volga. Johanna (DeGroot) Santema was born May 26, 1909, at Volga, South Dakota, to Fred and Agnes (DeVries) DeGroot. She attended school at Volga, and on January 29, 1929, married Gerrit Santema at Brookings. The couple farmed near Volga, and Johanna worked in the nursing home and Volga Caf. Gerrit died in 1984. Johanna was a member of Calvary Orthodox Presbyterian Church and the Oakwood Thrift Club. She enjoyed gardening, quilting, reading, jig saw puzzles, and board games. Survivors include seven children: Mary Ann (Harold) Williams of Hoyt Lakes, Minnesota, Bertha Coulson of Brookings, Arthur (Sharon) Santema of Arlington, William (Deanna) Santema of Volga, Helen Johnson of Tempe, Arizona, Leonard (Linda) Santema of Brookings, and Michael (JoAnn) Santema of Volga; 27 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and three sisters: Irene Lengkeek of Volga, and Gert Roede and Agnes DeGroot, both of Chicago, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a daughter, Gladys Artz; a grandson, Steve Santema; a great-grandson, Ryan Westlund; seven brothers: Fred Jr., Renze, William, Leonard, Otto, Albert, and Donald, and and two sisters: Margaret Hoogwerf and Leah Schubr.
