Joan Edell Pratt, 88, passed into the arms of her Lord and Savior on August 21st, 2026, at The Neighborhoods in Brookings, South Dakota, with her husband and daughter by her side.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 29, 2026, at Bible Baptist Church in Brookings, South Dakota. A Visitation will be held the night prior, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm on Friday, August 28, 2026, at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings, South Dakota.
Joan (Even) Pratt was born on October 12, 1937, to John and Alice (Larsen) Even in Tyler, Minnesota. She grew up on the family farm north of Elkton, South Dakota, with her siblings, Dale, Lyle, and Lois. Joan accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior at 8 years old. She attended a one-room country schoolhouse for three years and then went to Elkton to earn her high school diploma.
She married her high school sweetheart, LeRoy Pratt, on November 13, 1954, in Egan, South Dakota. Two children were born to this union, Clifford and Darla.
Later in life, Joan attended South Dakota State University and graduated in 1973, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics. While at SDSU, she was a proud member of Delta Kappa Gamma. They moved to Lake Benton to pursue her teaching career. She taught Home Economics to high school students for 26½ years. During her teaching career, Joan traveled with students to many regional, state, and national conventions, winning many awards for Future Homemakers of America later changed to FCCLA. Additionally, she led Early Childhood and Parenting sessions for parents of 4- and 5-year-olds as an after-school program.
Joan was very involved in the church, teaching Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and Ladies Bible Studies, and holding many other offices over the years. Joan loved traveling the world. She traveled to Israel, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, and 43 states, including Alaska and Hawaii. She also enjoyed scrapbooking, word searches, watching the Twins and Vikings, and watching her grandchildren play sports.
Joan joined the Extension Club of Brookings County, where she served in many different offices while she was involved. The club voted for her to attend the national convention held at South Dakota State University in Brookings, South Dakota. After the convention, she spoke at the Brookings County Convention, reporting on the involvement of the Extension Club throughout the USA.
Joan and LeRoy lived in Lake Benton, Minnesota, for 45 years before moving to Brookings, South Dakota, to be closer to family. She enjoyed having her family come by for many visits.
Those left to honor Joan’s memory are her husband, LeRoy, and their daughter, Darla (Kelvin) Adee of Brookings, South Dakota; their grandchildren, Kyle (Julia) Adee of Brookings, South Dakota, Dane (Melissa) Adee of Volga, South Dakota, Derek (Shawnalisa) Adee of Bruce, South Dakota, Kirk (Cassidy) Adee of Brookings, South Dakota, Jordan (Nathan) Johnson of Saint Augusta, Minnesota, Haley (Darren) Shanley of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Grayson (fiancée Amanda Barker) Pratt of Indianapolis, Indiana; and her great-grandchildren, Lola, Lucy, and Maverick Adee; Stella, Boe, and Jett Adee; Karmen, Dalton, and Bryce Adee; Carver and Kasen Adee; and Juliette, Vivianna, and Maverick Johnson.
She is also survived by her sister, Lois Knutson of Manistee, Michigan; sisters-in-law Judy Even of Elkton, South Dakota, and Marlene Even of Asbury, Iowa; brothers-in-law Ray (Marie) Pratt of Wyoming, Minnesota, Dave (Audrey) Pratt of Spring, Texas, Paul (Nidia) Clark of Bogota, Colombia; sister-in-law Judy (Warren) Frick of Cumming, Georgia; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Alice Even; parents-in-law, Roy and Lura Pratt; son, Clifford Pratt; brothers, Dale and Lyle; brother-in-law, Alvin Knutson; sister-in-law, JoAnne Clark; and many uncles, aunts, and cousins.
Joan will be deeply missed, never forgotten, and always loved.
