Jewell Julie Smith died Sunday, March 1, 2009, at Brookview Manor in Brookings, South Dakota. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, March 5, 2009, at First United Methodist Church in Brookings, preceded by interment at Greenwood Cemetery. Eidsness Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Jewell Lee Julie (Brown) Smith was born January 11, 1924, in Madison County, Georgia, to Clifford and Jewell (Branyan) Brown. She grew up in Georgia. She graduated from Crawford High School in 1941, and then attended business college in Atlanta for a year. She worked in Washington, D.C. for two years during World War II, where she married Boyce Smith on December 25, 1943. The Smiths moved to Beresford, South Dakota, in 1946 and then to Brookings in 1968. Julie worked for the Brookings Utilities Department, and retired when she was 62.
Julie was a member of First United Methodist Church and a life member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Beresford. She enjoyed golfing. She and Boyce wintered in south Texas for several years.
Survivors include her husband, Boyce Smith, of Brookings; three children: Ron (Martha Bunny) Smith of Thonotosassa, Florida, Sandra (Larry) Franklin of Volga, South Dakota, and Larry Smith of Brookings; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Retha Brown, of Winder, Georgia. She was preceded in death by a sister, Naomi; a brother Leo; and a grandson.
