Obituary

Jerry Vanden Berg, age 98, died Monday, May 16, 2011, at the United Retirement Center in Brookings. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Friday, May 20, 2011, at the Volga Christian Reformed Church, with interment in Trinity Cemetery. Visitations will be from 4-8 P.M. Thursday at Eidsness Funeral Chapel in Volga. Memorials may be directed to the Volga Christian Reformed Church or the Volga Christian School. Jerry Vanden Berg was born August 17, 1912, on a farm near Volga, South Dakota, to Benjamin and Josie (Wiersma) Vanden Berg. He attended country school and grew up in the Volga area. On December 30, 1943, he married Annigje "Anne" Den Otter at the Volga Christian Reformed Church. The couple began farming near Brookings and in the early 1960s bought a farm near Volga. In 1976 they moved into a new home in Volga and Jerry continued to do custom farm work. Jerry served on the consistory at Volga Christian Reformed Church and was active in the Men's Society. He and Anne were volunteers at Oakwood State Park for nine seasons, and they were named Volunteers of the Year by the South Dakota Parks Department. They wintered in Arizona for 24 years. Jerry enjoyed golfing, fishing, and pool. Survivors include his wife, Anne, of Brookings; three children: Ardith (Bob) Van Beek of Volga; Calvin (Linda) Vanden Berg of Shorewood, Illinois, and Marla Vanden Berg (Mark Knight) of Tempe, Arizona; three grandchildren: Lisa Van Beek, Chad (Megan) Vanden Berg, and Jarod (Heather) Vanden Berg; five great-grandchildren: Alexis, Cassidy, Logan, Ella, and Ty Vanden Berg; seven sisters: Mildred Mans of Holland, Michigan, Edith Mulder of Volga, Esther Meyer-Anderson of Brookings, Clara Mast of Volga, Harriet Kuipers of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Mae O'Neil of New Orleans, Louisiana, and Lois (Gene) Kleinjan of Bruce; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Dora Wagenaar and Bertha Jensen, and a brother, Daniel Vanden Berg.
