Jean H. Nelson, age 87, of Brookings, died Thursday, February 10, 2011, at the Brookings Hospital. Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday, February 19, 2011, at Our Savior Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brookings, with interment in Elmwood Cemetery at Bruce. Visitations will be from 5-8 P.M. Friday, Feb. 18, at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings. The family request that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to Our Savior Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brookings.
Jean Holdhusen Nelson was born September 12, 1923, at her grandparents home in Columbia, South Dakota, the daughter of Frank and Orpha (Hoover) Holdhusen. She spent her early years and received her grade school and first two years of high school education in Houghton, SD. She graduated from Brookings High School in 1941 and South Dakota State College in Brookings in June, 1945. She taught at White, Arlington, and Milbank before her marriage to Herschel Nelson of Bruce, South Dakota on May 31, 1948.
Following her marriage she lived at Bruce where she taught in the high school. She also taught part-time at Estelline and Volga in the years 1968-1972. Jean was a member of Our Savior Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brookings where she served as organist, choir director and Sunday School teacher. Jean was a Staff Assistant in the Music Department at South Dakota State University from 1985 until her retirement in May, 1998.
Over the years, she was a member of American Legion Auxiliary Unit #200 in Bruce and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2218 Auxiliary and served in several officer and chairmanship position. She also belonged to various clubs and organizations.
Survivors include two sons, Wayne (Janet) of St. Louis, Missouri and Keith (Vicki), South Sioux City, Nebraska. She is also survived by granddaughter Sara Nelson; sister Patricia (Roger) Arhelger, San Antonio, Texas; sisters-in-law Evelyn Holdhusen of Aberdeen and Mavis Peterson of Bruce; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and brothers James and Gerry Holdhusen.
