Jean Benson, age 77, of Volga, died Monday, June 28, 2004, at Brookview Manor in Brookings. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Friday, July 2, 2004, First Lutheran Church in Volga, with interment in Trinity Cemetery. Visitations will be from 5-8 P.M. Thursday at Eidsness Funeral Chapel in Volga. Dorothy Jean (Erickson) Benson was born May 24, 1927, at Volga, South Dakota, to George and Fern (Jones) Erickson. She attended school in Volga and graduated from Stewarts School of Hairstyling in 1961. On January 8, 1945, she married Dale Pederson. She married Gaylord Benson on December 2, 1961, at Pipestone, Minnesota. Jean worked as a hair stylist and as a baker at Hy Vee for ten years. She was widely known in the area for her homemade pies. Jean was a member of Calvary Presbyterian Church in Volga. She enjoyed baking pies, fixing hair, doing jigsaw puzzles, and spending time with her family and friends. Survivors include her husband, Gaylord, of Volga; seven children: Ken (Nila) Pederson of Brewster, Minnesota, Larry Pederson of Brookings, Tom Pederson of Springfield, South Dakota, Deb Judge of Pipestone, Minnesota, Wendi (Jim) Peterson of Volga, Deanna (Kevin) Wilson of Volga, and Eric (Karie) Benson of Volga; 26 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Velma Mundstock, of Brookings. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, three sisters, and a grandson.
