IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Janet
Moe
October 11, 1926 – March 15, 2019
Janet Moe, age 92, of Brookings, passed away at The Neighborhoods at Brookview March 15, 2019. We miss our beloved mom, sister, grandma, and friend. We thank God he gave us many years to cherish her.
Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 26 at Bethel Baptist Church in Brookings. Visitation is 5–7 p.m. Monday, March 25 at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings. Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery in White at a later date.
Janet was born October 11, 1926 in Hendricks, Minnesota to John and Lena (Kruse) Hulsebus. She lived in the White and Toronto area, attending Rural School District #60. When she was 9, her mom died so Janet helped manage the household and raise her siblings while her dad and brothers worked the farm. She later worked as a mother's helper for the Rogness family where she caught the eye of ElRoy Moe. They fell in love and married on October 13, 1945.
While she and ElRoy farmed in the White and Astoria area, Janet tended to their home and large vegetable and flower gardens and canned and baked the best bread. Their son, Norrill, was born in 1946 and their daughter, Linda, in 1950. Every night at bedtime, she said to her kids, "Goodnight, sleep tight. See you in the morning". They moved to Brookings in 1964 and Janet worked at the Brookings Hospital, until she retired in 1978. Janet learned to crochet, and kept her family stocked with cozy handmade afghans, delicate doilies, and hangers that now line our closets. Janet's hand-embroidered flour sack dish towels are a work of art and will be treasured forever—as will the beaded Christmas tree ornaments she made.
Janet looked forward to just hopping in the car with ElRoy and taking a drive in the country. Every Wednesday and Sunday they drove to White to spend time with her dad. They played Rook and ate chocolate covered peanuts most visits. She never missed a Sunday in church as long as she was physically able. She never missed sending a birthday card. She enjoyed teatime, her flower gardens, baking, Bible study, praying, lunch with her friends, geraniums, peonies (all flowers, really), and she lit up with the biggest smile when she was holding babies and puppies.
For as long as Janet was in her home, she kept routine days for cleaning, laundry, ironing, baking, and sewing. She was ready for company at a doorbell ring's notice. Anytime we visited Janet at home, we drank hot tea or coffee and we couldn't leave without grabbing something from her cookie jar and a tour of her fabulous flowers. We credit her for our obsession with clipping recipes, baking, and planting more flowers than we need.
What Janet cherished most was time with her family. For many of us she was our confidant and best friend. She chose to believe the best about everybody, and she taught us to be kind, to never judge, and to always forgive. People were uplifted just by being around her.
Janet's immediate survivors who will keep her legacy alive, are son Norrill (Marilyn) Moe; daughter Linda Moe; brother Johnnie Hulsebus; six grandchildren, Tammy Moe Hanson, Eugene (Danielle) Moe, Danielle (John) Griesenbrock, Heidi (Will) Thomssen, Staci Perry (Jason Mergenthal), Kalli Perry (Josh Reisetter); 15 great grandchildren, 3 great, great grandchildren; and brothers-in-law Carroll (Diann) Moe, Lyle Aaberg; and sister-in-law Ruth Hulsebus.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband of 61 years; sister Irene Franken; brothers Elmer Hulsebus, infant Raymond Hulsebus; and great granddaughter Amanda Jo Thomssen.
Thank you to Janet's family and friends who spent time with her the last few years. She so loved your visits—adding pieces to her puzzle on the table, telling stories and sharing pictures of her grandchildren. She returned to her heavenly home, praising the Lord in her last breaths. God bless you all.
