Obituary

Jan Thompson, age 59, of Bruce, died Sunday, August 12, 2012, at Avera-McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Thursday, August 16, 2012, at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Brookings. Visitations will be from 4-8 P.M. Wednesday at Eidsness Funeral Chapel in Volga. Janelle Marie (Peterson) Thompson was born August 16, 1952, at Brookings, South Dakota, to Donald and Mavis (Nelson) Peterson. She attended country school and then Sioux Valley School in Volga, where she graduated in 1970. On December 18, 1970, she married Scott Thompson at Estelline. Jan received an associate degree in business from SDSU and then worked in various jobs before becoming employed by First National Bank of Volga in 1981. She became the bank president in 2011. Jan was an active member of her community. She coached 4-H softball and was a life member and past president of the American Legion Auxiliary in Bruce. She served on the Planned Giving Committee at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Brookings. She spearheaded the modernization project at Sioux Valley Schools in 1991, and started a three-year financial life skills program at the school in 2011. She was a past-president of the Independent Community Bankers of South Dakota, and she was instrumental in opening the Brookings branch of First National Bank of Volga. She and Scott enjoyed traveling and antiquing. Jan was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, and sister. Survivors include her husband, Scott Thompson, of Bruce; two sons: Eric Thompson of El Dorado, Missouri, and Kipp (Laurie) Thompson of Denver, Colorado; four grandchildren: Madison, Carly, Allie, and Parkeron the way; her mother, Mavis Peterson, of Bruce; two sisters: Pam (Steve) Van Maanen of Volga, and Dawn (Todd) Landsman of Sioux Falls; a brother, Jerry Peterson, of Watertown, South Dakota; her mother-in-law, Edith Mulder, of Volga; and numerous other family members, and special friends. She was preceded in death by her father, Donald Peterson, and her grandparents.
