Obituary

James Nelson Talbert, 72, passed away on Friday, November 6, 2015 at his home at the Neighborhoods at Brookview in Brookings. The memorial service took place Sunday, November 8, at Greenwood Cemetery. Any donations in his memory may be made to the Humane Society of Brookings. He was born on February 22, 1943 in Washington, DC to Jim and Marjorie Talbert. Jim grew up in Washington, DC, graduating from Anacostia High School and earning a degree in Journalism from University of Maryland. After a brief stint as a reporter covering the Capitol, Jim began his 32-year career as an assistant superintendent in the U.S. House of Representatives Press Gallery. He went on to become superintendent of the U. S. Senate Periodical Press Gallery until his retirement in 2001. Jim retired to Brookings, SD with his wife, Judy Frie, a native of Brookings. He was involved in the Rotary Club, joined a men's coffee group, enjoyed playing bridge and watching SDSU sports, along with his beloved Nationals baseball team in DC. He was an avid reader. Jim was preceded in death by his parents Jim and Marjorie Talbert; his sister Lyn Defiebre; and his wife, Judy Frie. He is survived by his daughter, Teri Meyer of Burke, VA; his sister Judy Looker and her husband Ed of Green Acres, Washington, his grandchildren Matthew and Katie; and his loving nieces and numerous other relatives.
