James D. Roden, age 75, of Brookings, died Friday, July 22, 2016, in his sleep at the United Living Community in Brookings. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 27, 2016, at First Presbyterian Church in Brookings, with interment in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitations will be from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at Eidsness Funeral Home, with a public masonic service at 7:00 p.m.
James David Roden was born July 3, 1941, in Brookings, S.D., to David and Agnes (VanderWaal) Roden. In 1960, Jim graduated from Brookings High School. From 1964-1970 he was a member of the SD National Guard 741 st Transportation Company. He attended college at SDSU from 1960-1964 for Industrial Engineering. Jim was a lifelong resident of Brookings and one of its biggest supporters. He married Doris Ann Glantz Roden on August 21, 1966.
Jim was very active in the Brookings community and was always willing to help however he could. He was a 50-year member of the Brookings Masonic Lodge, Brookings York Rite Bodies, Past Grand Patron of Eastern Star, Brookings Shrine Club, an adviser for DeMolay, a Deacon at First Presbyterian Church, a driver putting on thousands of miles transferring people to medical appointments for the Brookings Volunteer Service Bank, a member of the Greenwood Cemetery Board, and a member of the Brookings Chamber of Commerce. Jim had a beautiful baritone singing voice. He was a member of the SDSU Statesmen, a choir member at First Presbyterian Church, and sang at hundreds of funerals and weddings, including his own when he and Doris were wed.
Jim worked at the SDSU Physical Plant for over 20 years and retired in 1986. He opened Insty-Prints (now Allegra), with Doris in 1985 and went to work as their Production Manager and Pressman in 1986. Jim loved to cook, camp, play cards, do Sudoku puzzles, travel with his wife Doris, and cheer on the SDSU Jacks men's and women's basketball teams. His greatest joy was his children and grandchildren. He especially enjoyed attending their numerous school events and concerts. During bowling season, you would always find him eating breakfast with Abby, Stanley and Dylan while they bowled.
Survivors include his son David (Angela) Roden of Brookings and daughter Julie (Stan) Scubelek; two granddaughters, Elizabeth and Abigail Roden, and two grandsons, Stanley and Dylan Scubelek. His parents and wife, Doris, preceded him in death.
