James Nass, age 74, of Brookings, passed away on Thursday, October 12, 2017, at the Brookings Hospital. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 17, 2017, at 11 A.M. at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings, with burial to follow at First Lutheran Cemetery in Brookings. Visitation will begin one hour prior to service. Eidsness Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
James Charles Nass was born on January 7, 1943, in Flandreau, South Dakota, to Olney Roy Nass and Corrine Betty (Mailey) Nass. Jim was raised on a farm near Flandreau, where he attended rural school through the 8th grade. Upon his father's untimely passing, his family moved to Volga, where he graduated from Sioux Valley High School in 1961. After graduation, Jim entered the United States Army, and attended basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Following basic training, Jim was stationed in Germany and France. Jim married Maxine Ann Christianson in 1962. To that union, two children were born: Laura R. Nass, and Jody R. Nass. Following his discharge in 1965, Jim attended and graduated from South Dakota State University with an engineering degree. From graduation until retirement in 2004, Jim was employed as a Civil Engineer for the City of Brookings.
Jim devoted many years of service time to the Police Reserves and was a member of the Elks Club. Several hobbies that he enjoyed were hunting, fishing, and playing cards. Jim was an avid reader and especially liked war and history novels. He enjoyed baking and sharing his goodies with others. Jim was a fan of music and listened to the Gaither Vocal Band, among some of his favorites.
Survivors include Jim's son, Jody Nass; a sister, Judy Cunningham, of Seattle, WA; a brother, Donald Nass, of Bremerton, WA; a sister, Linda Archuleta, of San Antonio, TX; a brother-in-law, Harlan Christianson, and his significant other, Mary Deleeuw; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding Jim in death are his beloved wife, Maxine; daughter Laurie; both his parents and grandparents; brother Rodney, sister Rindine, brother and sister-in-law, Quentin and Janiece Larsen; and brother-in-law, Ronnie Christianson.
