Obituary

James R. Hornby, age 66, of Brookings, died December 29, 2013, in Brookings. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Friday, January 3, 2014, at First Lutheran Church in Brookings. Visitations will be from 4-8 P.M. Thursday at First Lutheran Church. Memorials may be directed to the South Dakota Special Olympics. James Robert Hornby was born February 19, 1947, to Robert and Arloene (Jensen) Hornby of Aurora, SD. He was born and raised on the family farm in Aurora, SD. He was baptized and confirmed at the Aurora Methodist Church. And then became a member of the Brookings First Lutheran Church in 1963. He attended school at Trenton No. 84 through the 6th grade and 7th and 8th grade at Stembaugh School. From there, he graduated from Elkton High School in 1965. On July 28, 1967, Jim married Doris Harvey in Aurora, SD. He worked at SDSU in the maintenance department and post office and helped farm with his father until 1972. In 1970, Jim joined the Brookings Police Force, retiring as Captain in 2001. While on the force, he was instrumental in starting Safety Town; DARE; and started and led the SWAT team and the Brookings Police Reserves. Since retiring, he has mowed for Brookings Parks Department, delivered parts for NAPA, and most recently worked for Gary DeBeer Small Engine. Jim was a board member of the South Dakota Law Enforcement Torch Run and the South Dakota Special Olympics. He was currently serving as president of the South Dakota Peace Officer's Association; he was a member of South Dakota Rolling Thunder, Chapter 2; he is a founding member of the Brookings Police Department Foundation and a member of the Brookings area Crime Stoppers; he was a spokesperson for South Dakota in passing the seat belt safety law. Jim always took pride and put his whole heart into anything he was involved with. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He especially enjoyed spending time and doing things with his grandson, Jackson. He was an avid deer hunter, with a passion of going hunting with his oldest daughter and looking for that big buck. He coached both of his girls to play and enjoy softball. And over the years, he enjoyed time on his Harley. He is survived by his wife, Doris; daughters, Sarah (Jason) Keizer and Jessica Hornby; special grandson, Jackson Tyler Hornby; two sisters, Madalen (Bill) Farrin of Palmdale, CA and Sandra Stoltenberg of Brookings, SD; brother, Roger Hornby of Westminster, CO; sister-in-law, Jane Peterson of Cannon Falls, MN; mother-in-law, Shirley Harvey of Brookings, SD; sister-in-law, Donna (Alan) Riedesel of Brookings, SD; nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Arloene Hornby; sister, Judith Maureen; brother, Blayne C. Peterson; brother-in-law, Herb Stoltenberg; father-in-law, Leonard Harvey; brothers-in-law, Dale Harvey and Dennis Harvey.
