Irene Egeberg, age 90, of Volga, died Sunday, September 20, 2009, at the Brookings Hospital. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Thursday, September 24, 2009, at First Lutheran Church in Volga, with interment in the church cemetery. Visitations will be from 5-7 P.M. Wednesday at Eidsness Funeral Chapel in Volga.
Irene Lempi (Mattila) Egeberg was born June 17, 1919, at Bruce, South Dakota, to Oscar and Anna (Marttila) Mattila. She attended school and grew up at Bruce. On June 15, 1940, she married Raymond Egeberg at Lake Benton, Minnesota. After their marriage, the Egebergs farmed near Bruce until moving to Volga in 1959. Irene was employed at Terrys Rest Home in Volga from 1963 until 1965, when she began working for Parkview Nursing Home until her retirement in 1981. Ray died July 10, 1983.
Irene was a member of First Lutheran Church. She enjoyed gardening and quilting.
Survivors include a son, James (Peggy) Egeberg of Arlington, South Dakota; two daughters: Barbara (James) Hathaway of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Janice Guthmiller of Yankton, South Dakota; fifteen grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; four sisters: Esther Iwanicki of Volga, Aili Mattila and Helen Mattila, both of Plymouth, Michigan, and Laura Miller of Volga; a daughter-in-law, Barb Egeberg, of Volga; and a son-in-law, Allan Alexander, of Crooks, South Dakota. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray; a son, Donald; a daughter, Helen Alexander; and a grandson, Kevin Smidt.
