Howard Wallace Eggers was born July 31, 1914, at Hopkins, Missouri, to Andrew Jackson and Pearl Maude (Tillman) Eggers. At age 10, he moved with his parents to a farm south of Ogallala, Nebraska, where he was raised with four brothers and two sisters. He attended country school through the eighth grade. On February 8, 1948, he married Pauline E. Turley at San Diego, California. The couple returned to Ogallala and in April moved to Philip, South Dakota to farm for local landowners. They became landowners in the spring of 1960 and raised small grains and had a cow-calf operation. Howard also repaired machinery for himself and others in the winter-time and hired out for construction work. In the summer of 2002, Howard and Pauline moved to Brookings to be closer to two of their sons, Bud and David, and their families. He entered the United Retirement Center on September 2, 2008.

Howard served as a board member of the Farmers Union Oil Co-op and Elevator in Philip. He had an interest in old cars and tractors. He enjoyed playing pinochle, square dancing, and attending high school sports events of his children and grandchildren. He was a church board member in Philip and a member of First United Methodist Church in Brookings. He had also been active in Sunday School and the church mens group.
