Howard W. Deen, age 90, formerly of Brookings, died Saturday, March 20, 2004, at his home in Mercedes, Texas. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Friday, March 26, 2004, at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings, with interment in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitations will be from 5-7 P.M. Thursday at Eidsness Funeral Home. Howard William Deen was born May 30, 1913, at Whiting, Iowa, to Marshall Edward and Winifred Myrtle (Ping) Deen. On April 4, 1936, he married Margaret Marie Hale at Storm Lake, Iowa. Following their marriage, the Deens lived at Sloan, Iowa, and later moved to Brookings in 1953. They farmed northeast of Brookings before moving into town in 1982. Margaret died January 21, 1991. On January 3, 1994, Howard married Pauline Cruth. The couple made their home in Mercedes, Texas. Howard enjoyed fishing, pheasant hunting, traveling, motorcycling, playing cards, and spending time with his family and friends. Survivors include his wife, Pauline Deen, of Mercedes, Texas; two children: Janna V. Deen of Brookings and Richard (Edythe) Deen, of Ririe, Idaho; two step-children: Connie Veley and Judie Schwerdtfeger, both of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; eleven grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Margaret; a brother, Clarence (Ben) Deen; and a sister, Leola Green. . .
