Obituary

Homer Knutsen, 86, of Volga, passed away on Tuesday, November 2, 2021, at the Neighborhoods at Brookview.  Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 6, 2021, at the First Lutheran Church in Volga, at 2:00 P.M.  The service will be live streamed on the First Lutheran Church of Volga's Facebook page, as well as recorded and uploaded to the Eidsness Funeral Home website following the service.  A time of visitation will be held preceding the service from 1:00 until 2:00 P.M. at the church.  Burial will immediately follow the service at First Lutheran Cemetery in Volga.  A time of fellowship will follow the burial at the First Lutheran Church in Volga, where friends and family are invited to enjoy some of Homer's favorite treats-cake and SDSU ice cream.

Homer Stanley Trovaag Knutsen was born in Centerville, SD on September 6, 1935, to Helge and Signe (Pedersen) Knutsen.  He attended country school in Winsor Township and then went to high school in Volga, SD.  He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.  In 1968, he married Betty Priebe from Waseca, MN, who he met at a Minnesota Twins baseball game in Minneapolis.  Homer enjoyed farming in Winsor Township and was always willing to lend a helping hand to neighbors.  When the farm crisis of the 80's forced him out of farming, he kept busy on weekends helping area farmers.  He was employed at Sioux Valley Schools in Volga and at Larson Manufacturing in Brookings.  After retirement he spent many summer afternoons mowing lawns for friends.  When his physical health failed him in 2020, he entered the Neighborhoods at Brookview where he said they treated him like a king.  Homer was a faithful member of First Lutheran Church of Volga, where he enjoyed worshipping and serving as an usher.

Homer is survived by his wife, Betty, of Volga; son, Michael and his wife Sammi, of Mooringsport, LA; and daughter Jennifer Brown and her fiancé Clint Chandler, of Holliday, MO.  He is also survived by granddaughters Marleigh (Tristen) Hefner, of Lubbock, TX, and Maddy Brown, of Waco, TX.  Other survivors include a brother, Morris Knutsen, of Volga, and sisters Sylvia Riedel, of Madison, and Beverly Bjerke, of Brookings, along with numerous nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Kenneth, and granddaughter, Mason Signe.

We would like to thank the staff at The Neighborhoods for the fine care that Homer received in the 18 months he was there.  In lieu of flowers, any memorials can be directed to Volga First Lutheran Cemetery, or to a charity of your choice.
