Obituary

Hilda A. Helvig, 94, of Lake Benton died Friday, May 30, 2003, at the Hendricks Nursing Home in Hendricks, Minnesota. Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Thursday at the United Church of Christ in Brookings with interment at the Elkton City Cemetery. Visitations are from 5-7 P.M. Wednesday at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings and preceding services at the church on Thursday. Hilda Anna (Hammer) Helvig was born January 11, 1909, the oldest daughter of William C. and Dora Ann (Johannsen) Hammer, in rural Elkton, South Dakota. She was baptized and confirmed at Peace Evangelical Church in Elkton, South Dakota. She attended rural schools in Verdi and Drammen townships and grew to womanhood. On September 5, 1934, she married Matthew J. Helvig at the Elkton Peace Evangelical parsonage. They lived for a short time in Brookings County and then moved to Lincoln County, Minnesota, to the farm in Drammen Township where they lived for over 60 years. Matt and Hilda moved to the Hendricks Nursing home in 1996. Matt died November 14, 1998. Hilda had been a member of the Peace United Church of Christ in Elkton and the womens fellowship. She was currently a member of the Brookings United Church of Christ. For Hilda, a farmers wife, the joys of her life were her church, her family, and her flower gardensflowers that now bloom in her grandchildrens gardens. Hilda is survivors by her son, Eugene and wife, Susan Helvig, of Lake Benton, Minnesota; grandchildren: Bethany Helvig, M.D., and her husband, Allen Funk, M.D., of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Christopher Helvig and his wife, Lisa, of Denver, Colorado, Monique Helvig, of Portland, Oregon, and Aaron Helvig and his fiance, Jill Fossum, of Sturgis, South Dakota; and two great-grandchildren, Josephine and Alexandra. Hilda was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Luella Erschens; her husband, Matt; and grandson, Nathan.
