Helene K. Sandman, age 93, of Volga, died Saturday, June 9, 2012, at Brookview Manor in Brookings. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, June 13, 2012, at First Lutheran Church in Volga, with interment in the church cemetery. Visitations will precede services at the church on Wednesday, beginning at 1:00 p.m. Eidsness Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Helene Kathrine (Bertelsen) Sandman was born November 20, 1918, on the Bertelsen homestead on the east edge of Volga, to Soren and Dorthea (Terkelsen) Bertelsen. She was baptized at First Lutheran Church of Volga by Rev. Mannes. Her family traveled by horse and buggy or wagon until 1925 when her father purchased the family's first automobile. She attended grade school and high school in Volga, graduating in May 1936. During the summer of 1935, she worked for a farm family for $1.50 per week. Helene met Edward Sandman as he was working for a road construction company in the Ahnberg area. They married November 20, 1936, in Volga. Ed's work with road construction took them many places including Lake Superior, Garrison Dam in North Dakota, the Black Hills, and Pine Ridge. In 1944 they bought a home in Volga. They had three children: Lois, Loren, and Linda. Helene's hobbies include crocheting, embroidering, quilting, baking, cooking, writing letters to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and spending time with her family. Survivors include her three children: Lois (Don) Syvertson of Clark, South Dakota, Loren (Marie) Sandman of Little Falls, Minnesota, and Linda Jelly of Volga; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, six siblings, and her husband in 1996.
