Helen M. McCone, age 85, died Tuesday, January 27, 2004, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, February 2, 2004, at First Presbyterian Church in Brookings, with Rev. J. David Johnson officiating. Memorials may be directed to the SDSU Foundation or to First Presbyterian Church. Helen Margaret (Schoenwether) McCone was born September 14, 1918, at Brookings, South Dakota, to Albert Eugene and Sarah Ann (Caldwell) Schoenwether. She graduated from Brookings High School in 1935 and from South Dakota State College in 1942. Following graduation, she taught school prior to her marriage to William McCone on October 30, 1943, at Brookings. During Bills service in World War II, Helen lived in Olympia, Washington, where she operated a portrait studio. Following the war, the couple lived in Sioux City, Iowa, and then returned to Brookings. They spent several winters in Tucson, Arizona. Bill died April 17, 2002. Helen moved to Colorado Springs in April 2003 to be near her daughter Jean. Helen was a member of First Presbyterian Church, P.E.O., Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Faculty Womens Club. While her family was always a priority, she enjoyed playing bridge, golfing, and traveling. She was a fan of the Minnesota Vikings and Twins and enjoyed talking about sports. Survivors include her two daughters, Ann (David) Biggar of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Jean (Mert) Forsyth of Colorado Springs, Colorado; five grandchildren: Aaron (Donna) Biggar, Jerrad (Abby) Biggar, Merilee Forsyth, Matt Forsyth, and Tim Forsyth; a great-grandson, Tyler Forsyth; and a brother, Kenneth (Irene) Schoenwether.
