Obituary

Helen Christie, age 81, of Brookings, died Monday, November 13, 2006, at Brookview Manor in Brookings. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Friday, November 17, 2006, at First United Methodist Church in Brookings, with interment in Greenwood Cemetery. An Order of Eastern Star service will be conducted at the funeral service at the church. Visitations will be from 5:00 to 8:30 P.M. Thursday at Eidsness Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Building Fund, the Child Welfare Fund, or 40&8. Helen Mae (Langendorfer) Christie was born March 8, 1925, at Foley, South Dakota, to Wayne and Minna (Grahlmann) Langendorfer. She attended grade school at Foley, and also worked for a neighbor lady there. On December 31, 1950, she married Dean Christie at Foley. She and Dean lived on the family farm south of Brookings. She enjoyed having a large garden, and she provided meals and lunches for the field and threshing crews. Helen was active in many organizations including First United Methodist Church and circle, the Order of the Eastern Star, Senior Citizens, 8&40 Cabane No. 129, Boxcar Hoboes, Medary Extension Club, and Gala Ladies Aid. She was a charter member of the Brookings Quilt Guild and was involved in the Brookings Quilting Club. She was a life member of the American Legion Auxiliary and V.F.W. Auxiliary. She enjoyed quilting, reading, handwork, knitting, and vegetable and flower gardening, especially her irises and hollyhocks. Survivors include her husband, Dean Christie, of Brookings; a daughter, Joy (Gary) Griesse of Harrisburg, South Dakota; two sons: Gary Christie of Brookings and Scott (Julie) Christie of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; six grandchildren: Trent (Sarah), Nathan, Derek, and Tyson Griesse, and Marisa and Ryan Christie; a great-granddaughter, Kiley; two brothers: Wayne Jr. (Mary Lou) Langendorfer and Burton (Darlene) Langendorfer, both of Watertown, South Dakota; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Ruth Clark.
