Hazel Urevig, nee Kennell, of Brookings, died Tuesday, July 7, 2015, at age 98, at the Golden Living Center in Arlington. Memorials should be given to ESTARL (Eastern Star Training Awards for Religious Leadership). Memorial Services will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, September 24, 2015, at First Lutheran Church in Brookings. Hazel was born in Dorchester, Nebraska, to Daniel J. and Laura Ann (Schweitzer) Kennell. She grew up in Miller, South Dakota, where she moved with her family when she was nine years old. She graduated from Miller High School in 1934. She worked for the South Dakota Department of Education from 1934 until 1937. She married Harold W. Urevig on July 26, 1937. Hazel and Harold made their home in Brookings, where Hazel was an involved mother and active in many organizations, and Harold owned The Urevig Bootery. She was a member of First Lutheran Church and active in church activities. She was a den mother for the Cub Scouts and a Sunday School teacher. She was a member of the Roethian Club and Sorosis. Her involvement with the Order of the Eastern Star provided her the opportunity to travel and serve for many years as a member of Brookings Chapter No. 15, O.E.S., Grand Matron and Grand Treasurer of the Grand Chapter of South Dakota, O.E.S., Worthy Grand Matron, and on the credentials committee of the General Grand Chapter from 1983 until 1986. She worked for the State as a senior companion for many years, until she resigned at the age of 97! Hazel also enjoyed bowling, golfing, knitting, crocheting, reading, traveling, and playing bridge. Following Harold's retirement in 1972, the Urevigs lived in Sun City, Arizona, until returning to Brookings in 1983. Hazel's survivors include her brother, Gene Kennell (Doris) of Sioux Falls, her son Richard (Lucie Dumas) of Northbrook, Illinois, her daughter Judith (Barry Clough) of Greensboro, Georgia, five grandchildren: Karin Urevig Yohe (Kent), Katherine Urevig, Brent Clough (Stephani), Stephanie Clough Russell (Richard) and Eric Clough (Kate), twelve great grandchildren: Erik Yohe (Kyle), Kyle and Megan Yohe, Spencer, Taylor, twin girls - Morgan and Madison Clough, Isabelle, Dylan, Anna and Maria Russell, and Lucien Clough. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Urevig, her sister, Veryl Halbig, her four brothers Merlin, Donald, Gerald, and Alfred, and her great grandson, Connor Clough.
