Hazel E. Stangeland, age 90, of Brookings, died Thursday, March 24, 2005, at the Brookings Hospital. Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Monday, March 28, 2005, at the First United Methodist Church in Brookings. Visitations will be from 4-7 P.M. Sunday at Eidsness Funeral Home. Hazel Eva (Swanson) Stangeland was born February 9, 1915, at Polk, Nebraska, to Frank LeRoy and Martha E. (Roemmich) Swanson. She grew up in the Gary, South Dakota, area, one of seven children. She attended country school and high school in Gary, where she graduated in 1934. On July 5, 1934, she married Herman Buck Stangeland at Clear Lake, South Dakota. Hazel and Buck lived in the Gary area and worked through the WPA years, farmed and raised their children near Gary to 1958, when the family moved into Gary. Buck died in 1960. The family continued living in Gary and moved to Brookings in December 1969. Hazel provided babysitting for many year in Brookings. She enjoyed extensive acrylic painting, sewing for herself, family, and others, crocheting, and writing poetry. Survivors include her five children: Kathleen Rounds of Anacortes, Washington, Ronald (Barbara A.) Stangeland of Brookings, Raymond (Theodora) Stangeland of Gillette, Wyoming, Marilyn (William) Lyles of Seattle, Washington, and Monica (Kelly) Caldwell of Hot Springs, South Dakota; fourteen grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and a sister, Doris Streich, of Revillo, South Dakota. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert, Frank, and Burndean, and two sisters, Burnice Nordseth and Nellie Wiese.
