Obituary

Harvey H. Hai, age 90, of Brookings, died Monday, February 5, 2007, at the United Retirement Center in Brookings. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Thursday, February 8, 2007 at First United Methodist Church in Brookings, with interment and military graveside rites at Greenwood Cemetery. Visitations will be from 5-8 P.M. Wednesday at Eidsness Funeral Home. Harvey Henry Hai was born October 15, 1916, at Flandreau, South Dakota, to Henry Charles and Anna D. (Tiedemann) Hai. He moved with his family to a farm north of Brookings in 1923. Harvey attended country school in Argo Township. Prior to World War II, he worked for Sturdevant Auto Electric and Meester Auto Electric in Brookings, and then Douglas Aircraft in Long Beach, California, for three months. During the war, he served in the Army Air Corps in Burma, China, and India. He was discharged from the service in 1945 at Lowery Air Base in Colorado. On January 5, 1946, Harvey married Veryl D. Cook in Brookings. He worked for LeFevre Motor Company until August 1, 1949, when he began his partnership with Arthur Smith in the Smith and Hai Garage. In 1964, after the death of Mr. Smith, the business was known as Hai Garage. He retired in 1980, and his son, Doug, continued the business. Veryl died January 28, 1978. Harvey was a member of First United Methodist Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and American Legion. He enjoyed fishing and bowling. Survivors include his three sons: Douglas H. (Linda) Hai of Brookings, Dwight C. (Marsha) Hai of Sioux Falls, and Dean I. Hai (Carol Varpness) of Brookings; ten grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Lewis (Ruth) Hai, of Sioux Falls; and a sister, Lena Wackerbarth, of Sibley, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and a sister, Laura Engberg. Clergy Rev. Teri Johnson Music Mildred K.
