Obituary

Harry M. Elverud, age 84, of Volga, died Sunday, March 14, 2004, at the United Retirement Center in Brookings, South Dakota. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, March 17, 2004, at First Lutheran Church in Volga, with interment in the church cemetery. Visitations will be from 5-8 P.M. Tuesday at Eidsness Funeral Chapel in Volga. Harry Milford Elverud was born May 3, 1919, in Oslo Township near Volga, South Dakota, to Tom and Mary (Lund) Elverud. He attended country school in Oslo District No. 97. On October 17, 1942, he married Clarice Selland at Nunda, South Dakota. Harry and Clarice farmed on the family farm until retiring in 1988. Harry was a member of First Lutheran Church where he had served as a trustee and on the cemetery board. He was the clerk of Oslo District No. 97 country school. When the school closed, he purchased the building and moved it to the farm where he made it into a museum. He was a member of the Lake Campbell Sportsmans Club and the Sons of Norway. He and Clarice traveled to Norway, and enjoyed visiting with relatives there. He enjoyed watching sports, playing cards, hunting, and helping Clarice make lefse. Harry will be remembered for his gentleness and caring love for his family. Survivors include his wife, Clarice, of Volga; children: Larry (Nancy) Elverud of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Kathleen (Jerome) Nusz of Sioux Falls, Cynthia (Clyde) Ulvestad of Volga, and Mary Lou Albright of Rapid City, South Dakota; a niece and nephew who he and Clarice raised as their children: Julie Keiser and Harold Vostad, both of Beresford, South Dakota; fourteen grandchildren: Nicole (Dana) Salonen, Amber (Vikas) Khanna, Heather (Mike) Caron, Crystal (Jon) Paone, Ruben Nusz, Ben Nusz, Sarah (Loren) Keizer, Andrea Ulvestad, Carrie Albright, Tara Albright, Matt Keiser, Thomas Keiser, Justin Vostad, and Brandon Vostad; four great-grandchildren: Taylor, Dylan, Mia, and Sam; two brothers: Morris Elverud of Cornelius, Oregon, and Lloyd (Goldie) Elverud of Volga; and a sister, Ruby Kroeger, of Owatonna, Minnesota. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Emil Elverud, and a sister, Mae Thompson.
