Harriet Louise (Van Beek) Mast was born on April 27, 1931 to William (Bill) & Hattie (Hoogeboom) Van Beek. She went to be with her Lord and Savior on March 30, 2016. We rejoice today because we know she is in her Father's arms.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 4, 2016, at First Reformed Church in Volga, with interment in Trinity Cemetery. Visitations will be from 3-5 p.m. Sunday at Eidsness Funeral Chapel in Volga.
Harriet attended Bangor 4 Elementary School near Volga. After eighth grade, she began working for local families caring for their children. At fifteen, she began working at the Volga Hospital beginning with kitchen and laundry duties and finally becoming a nurse's aid. Harriet also worked for the Brookings Hospital, Julians Bakery, Beatty's Jewelry, Winks Jewelry, and Coast to Coast Warehouse.
Harriet married Clarence Mast on August 5, 1952 at the Christian Reformed Church in Volga, SD. They had five daughters and one son. They were blessed with eleven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
In 1989, Harriet earned her GED and was accepted to Lake Area Vo-Tech to pursue a degree in nursing. She instead decided to join Clarence, who had recently retired. Clarence and Harriet then spent many years traveling the country volunteering for CRWRC (Christian Reformed World Relief Committee) and the Red Cross, responding to natural disasters and showing tangible Christian love to others in need.
Harriet's greatest gift was in caring for others, her children and grandchildren, numerous foster children, patients, co-workers and friends.
