Harold H. VanDerVliet, age 89, of Volga, went peacefully to be with the Lord on May 3, 2014. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, May 6, at First Reformed Church in Volga, with interment in Trinity Cemetery. Visitations will be from 4-7 P.M. Monday at First Reformed Church in Volga. Harold Henry VanDerVliet was born November 15, 1924, at Colton, SD, to Evert and Willemena (Van Hunnik) VanDerVliet. On June 16, 1947, he married Betty DeKnikker at Colton. They farmed near Colton and then moved south of Brookings in 1953. Whey Harold retired they moved to Volga in 1978 where he drove school bus. He also volunteered at the county museum in Volga. He was on the school board for Trenton No. 81 country school. He enjoyed Christian music and playing cards at the Senior Center in Volga. Survivors include his wife, Betty, of Arlington; six children: Larry and Connie VanDerVliet of Sisseton, SD (Stacy and Chad Parmely, Slade, Tryton, and Ryker, Sara and Matt Heuimiller, Hayle, Alexis, Carter and Issia, Josh VanDerVliet); Beverly and Jerry Thon of Cumberland, WI, (Davis and Melissa, Susan, Rebecca and Garrett, Darin Thon, Travis Thon, Kimberly and Chad Anderson, Trenton and Tiarra); Ruth and Kevin Price of Brookings (Mindy Price, Dustin and Roxann Price, Gwendolynn); Allan and Janelle VanDerVliet of Brookings; Loren and Cathy VanDerVliet of Deadwood, SD (Crystal and John Mamola, Noah, Dakota VanDerVliet); and Wayne and Karen VanDerVliet of Sioux Falls, SD (Tonia and Mike Herman, Cheyenne, Jesse, Trevor, Jason, and Stefanie VanDerVliet, and Shannon. Harold had three siblings: Tina and Henry Burgers, Marie and Frank Reurink, and Gerald and Ethel VanDerVliet. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, and a niece.
