Obituary

Harold W. Urevig, age 96, of Brookings, died Tuesday, September 26, 2006, at the United Retirement Center in Brookings, South Dakota. Memorial services will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday, September 30, 2006, at First Lutheran Church in Brookings, with visitations preceding services. Interment will be at a later date at First Lutheran Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the A.C.T.S. program of the Order of the Eastern Star. Harold Wilmer Urevig was born March 13, 1910, in Napoleon, North Dakota, to Fred S. and Carrie (Steie) Urevig. At an early age his parents and older brother moved to Watertown, South Dakota. He graduated from Watertown High School and attended the University of North Dakota for two years. He worked in Watertown and Pierre before opening an exclusive shoe store in Brookings in 1936. On July 26, 1937, Harold married Hazel Kennell at Miller, South Dakota. Harold was a devoted husband and a loving father to their children, Richard Louis and Judith Ann, always participating in their activities, including Boy and Girl Scouts. He loved people and was a friend to all. Harold was a member of First Lutheran Church in Brookings, where he always took an active part until recent years when his health failed him. He served on the building committee when the present church was built. He was a man of great faith and passed his love of God on to his family. He was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. As a businessman he was very active in the Chamber of Commerce and the Kiwanis Club. He was a 52 year member of the Brookings Masonic Lodge, No. 24, A.F.&A.M., a Shriner, and a member of Brookings Chapter No. 15 of the Order of the Eastern Star where he served as Worthy Patron in 1963 and 1971. He was a life member of the Elks. In 1972, Harold sold his shoe business and retired. In 1973 he moved to Sun City, Arizona, and enjoyed life there for ten years before moving back to Brookings in 1983. He was an avid golfer and hunter. Harold is survived by his wife, Hazel, of Brookings; a son, Richard Urevig and his fiance Lucie Dumas, of Northbrook, Illinois; a daughter, Judith Clough and her husband Barry, of Greensboro, Georgia; five grandchildren: Karin Yohe, her husband Kent and their three children Erik, Kyle, and Megan; Katherine Urevig; Brent Clough and his wife Stephani and their four children, Spencer, Taylor, and twin girls Morgan and Madison; Stephanie Russell and her husband Richard and their four children, Isabelle, Dylan, Anna, and Marie; Eric Clough, Kate Fenner, and their son Lucien. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Claude; and a great-grandson, Conner Clough. He will be remembered by all who knew him for his unending kindness, his loving and accepting nature, his gentle disposition, and always wanting to serve others.
