Harold R. Platt, age 82, of Brookings, died Friday, June 12, 2015, at the Brookings Hospital. Funeral mass will be 1:30 p.m. Monday, June 15, 2015, at St. Thomas More Catholic Parish in Brookings, with interment in First Lutheran Cemetery. Visitations will be from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings, with a wake service at 7:30 p.m. Harold R. Platt was born February 6, 1933, at Watertown, South Dakota, to Harry and Ruby (Schmeling) Platt. He received his education at Holy Rosary in Kranzburg and graduated from Goodwin High School in 1951. In 1952 he married Nola Jean Akkerman. Harold was then employed at McGrann's Construction Co. for eleven years and also farmed. In 1964, they moved to Brookings where Harold was employed at H.E. Mills Construction for fifteen years. In 1967 they moved to White and returned to Brookings in 1980, when Harold became employed at SDSU as a painter. Nola died in January 1985. In December 1985, Harold married Evelyn Wallum. He continued working at SDSU until his retirement in 2008. Harold was proud to be a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Parish and the Elks. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, farming, and especially enjoyed attending his grandchildren's' sporting events. He was an avid Twins and Vikings fan. Survivors include his wife, Evelyn, of Brookings; his children, Larry Platt of Elizabeth, New Jersey, Jim (Jan) Platt of Ft. Madison, Iowa, Linda (Larry) Mitchell of Toronto, South Dakota, Richard (Nancy) Platt of Brookings, and David (Lisa) Platt of Norwood, Colorado; his step-children, Betty (Andy) Vincent of Lake Preston, South Dakota, Steve Wallum of Laramie, Wyoming, and Greg (Chris) Wallum of Lexington, Kentucky; a step-daughter-in-law, Rhonda Wallum, of Tea, South Dakota; 13 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; a brother, Melvin (Sharon) Platt, of Sioux Falls; and a sister, Joanne (Roger) LaQua, of Columbia, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife; a step-son, Jeff Wallum; and two grandchildren.
