May 18, 1946 – December 7, 2021
Harley A. Pope Sr. of Brookings, passed away on Tuesday, December 7, 2021, with his family by his side at the age of 75. A memorial service will be held on Friday, December 17, 2021, at 2:00 P.M. at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings. Following the service there will be a time of fellowship and sharing of cake and cookies at the funeral home. Burial will take place at a future date at Black Hills National Cemetery.
Harley was born on May 18, 1946 to Charles and Anna (Mitchell) Pope in Pierre, South Dakota. They lived in Fort Pierre until Harley was three years old. The family then moved to Wendt, South Dakota. Harley graduated from Riggs High School in 1966. In July of 1967, Harley was drafted into the United States Army and proudly served his country in Vietnam until 1969. After his service in the Army, Harley returned home to Wendt. Harley was united in marriage to Carrie Henrichsen on November 21, 1969.
Harley worked for the CNW and Union Pacific Railroad for over 34 years until his retirement.
Harley enjoyed hunting, fishing, and attending classic car shows, especially with his children.
Harley is survived by his wife, Carrie, of Brookings; children: Harley Jr. (Erica Butler) Pope of Brookings, Charles Pope, of Phillip, SD, Laura (BJ) Byer of Tea, SD, Travis Pope, of Brookings, and Teala (Matt) Wetterling, of Forest Lake, MN; 8 grandchildren; numerous nieces of nephews; and several extended family members.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his two brothers, Robert and Marvin; and sister-in-law Mavis Pope.
