Grace C. Kurtz, age 98, of Brookings, died Sunday, December 28, 2014, at the Brookings Hospital. Visitations will be from 4-6 P.M. Friday, January 2, at Eidsness Funeral Home. Memorial services will be 10:30 A.M. Saturday, January 3, 2015, at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings. Grace C. (Lees) Kurtz was born November 19, 1916, at Elkton, South Dakota, to Walter and Caroline (Risch) Lees. She lived with her family on the farm near Elkton until moving to Brookings. Grace graduated from Brookings High School in 1934 and from South Dakota State College in 1938. On May 28, 1940, she married Ervin Kurtz at Brookings. Grace taught in high schools in Elkton, Estelline, and Lake Benton. Ervin died April 5, 2002. Grace was a member of First United Methodist Church. She enjoyed wood carving, biking, travel, and golf. Survivors include a son, David (LaVonne) Kurtz, of Brookings; a daughter, Diane (Richard) Rider of San Diego, California; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two brothers: Wallace Lees of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Robert (Dorothy) Lees of Brookings. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and sister, Gladys.
