Obituary

Gordon J. Miller, age 91, of Brookings, died Friday, March 18, 2011, at Brookview Manor in Brookings. Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Monday, March 21, 2011, at First Lutheran Church in Brookings, with interment and military rites in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitations will be from 3-6 P.M. Sunday at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings.

Gordon Joseph Miller was born January 6, 1920, at Worthington, Minnesota, to Hugh and Laura (Nelson) Miller. He grew up on a farm at Clark, South Dakota, graduating from Clark High School in 1938. On June 11, 1941, he married Hazel Seefeldt at Clark. Gordon served in the U.S. Army from 1942 until 1943 and then bought a farm at Clark. He began working for the Huron Police Department in 1955, and joined the Brookings Police Department in 1963. He retired as Chief of Police in 1985.

Gordon was a member of First Lutheran Church, the American Legion, 40 & 8, Brookings Exchange Club, Golden K Kiwanis, Elks, and South Dakota Peace Officers. He was a Red Cross First Aid Instructor. He raised Suffolk sheep, showed them at the South Dakota State Fair for 50 consecutive years, and was sheep superintendent at the State Fair for 25 years. He served as a 4-H leader for 25 years, and was inducted into the 4-H Hall of Fame in 2000. He received the Good Neighbor Award in 2004.

Survivors include his wife, Hazel Miller, of Brookings; two daughters, Marlys Bullington, of Brookings, and Rita (Roger) Stahlecker, of Bloomfield, Nebraska; a son, Larry G. (Linda) Miller, of Kansas City, Missouri; a foster son, Jack (Diane) Boatright, of Hartford, South Dakota; eleven grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; sons-in-law; Earl Bullington and Donald Christensen; and two brothers: Virgil and Ralph Miller.
