Obituary

Glenda Burr was born September 23, 1938, at Provo, Utah, to Glen and Theda (Jones) Burr. She was raised at Orem, Utah, graduating in 1956 from Lincoln High School. She attended Brigham Young University at Provo, Utah, receiving her B.S. Degree in Medical Technology in 1960. During that period, she met and married Harry Hecht and during the first year of their marriage, she completed her Medical Technology internship at the Holy Cross Hospital in Salt Lake City. In 1961 she moved with her husband and young son, David, to Chicago, Illinois. During the one year spent there a second son, James, was born. The next three years were spent in Lubbock, Texas, and it was there that her third son, Daniel, was born. The young family spent a year in Australia, and then several years at Los Alamos, New Mexico. Following another experience abroad in Germany, she moved with her family in 1973 to Brookings, South Dakota. After the children were raised, Harry and Glenda spent a year as foreign exchange professors at the Yunnan Normal University in Kunming China. During that time Glenda taught English in an adult education setting. She also enjoyed teaching chemistry laboratories at South Dakota State University during the 1990's. Following their retirement in 1999, Harry and Glenda spent some time in service as missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Germany and in Sundance, Wyoming. Glenda was an active participant in church and community affairs. She served during various periods as president of the women's service organization (Relief Society) of the LDS Church, and as president and teacher in the children's program (Primary). Her community service included being PTA president, Hospital Auxiliary president, DuCum Extension Club president, US Friends president, and Summerhill Townhomes Association president. One of her particularly satisfying experiences was serving as director of the Brookings LDS Family History Center for several years. Glenda passed away peacefully in her home following a long battle with cancer, with a feeling of deep appreciation to community healthcare providers and Relief Society sisters for their many acts of kindness. She is survived by her husband (Harry), her three sons (David and wife Jackie and their four children of Sioux Falls, James and wife Rachel and their five children of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Daniel of Columbus Ohio), one sister (Leeta and husband Richard DuBois of Linden, Utah), and five brothers (Glade of Salem, Utah, Ron and wife Pat of Beaver, Utah, Brent and wife Helen of Cedar City, Utah, Wayne and wife Beverly, currently serving as humanitarian missionaries in the Ukraine, and Mac and wife Bonnie of South Jordan, Utah). Visitation will be held at the Eidsness Funeral Home July 7 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm, and funeral services will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints chapel at 200 22nd Avenue in Brookings beginning at 10:30 am on July 8.
