Obituary

Glen J. Langum, age 84, of Sinai, died Thursday, December 30, 2004, at the Royal C. Johnson Veterans Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 4, 2005, at the Sinai Lutheran Church, with interment in the West Sinai Lutheran Cemetery. Visitations will be from 4-7 p.m. Monday at Eidsness Funeral Chapel in Volga. Glen Jerome Langum was born September 7, 1920, at Sinai, South Dakota, to Samuel and Cornelia (Erickson) Langum, the youngest of five brothers and three sisters. He grew up on the Langum farm southwest of Sinai, and attended Pine Grove District No. 45 country school. He graduated from Sinai High School in 1939. He attended Nettleton Commercial College for two years, and audited books for the Tuthill Lumberyard briefly before enlisting in the U.S. Navy in March 1942. He served in the New Guinea and Solomon Island area, and was nominated for naval flight training. After his discharge from the Navy, he returned to Sinai to operate the Sinai Hardware and Grocery Store with his brother George. On July 13, 1947, he married Sylvia Clement. They continued to operate the stores until 1973 when they bought the Embret Clement farm. Glen worked in plumbing and heating for over 50 years, and was proud of installing the Sinai water system. Sylvia died August 9, 1985. On July 11, 1987, Glen married Janice Quail, a longtime friend. Glen was an active member and officer of the Quail-Evenson American Legion Post No. 133 in Sinai. He served as president and trustee of Sinai Lutheran Church. He was a board member of the Brookings-Lake Telephone Company for 15 years. He served on the Sinai Town Board and the Brookings County Draft Board. Survivors include his wife, Jan, of Sinai; three sons: Donald (Diane) Langum of Brookings, Jerome (Bonnie) Langum of Spearfish, and Brian (Linda) Langum of Plymouth, Wisconsin; two step-sons: Todd (Lola) Quail of Phoenix, Arizona, and Thomas Quail of Des Moines, Iowa; two step-daughters: Janelle (Ernie) McHugh of Grand Junction, Colorado, and Kris (Byron) Hilliard of Durango, Colorado; 16 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a brother, Charles (Anne) Langum, of Brookings.
