Gertrude Meyer, age 91, of Volga, died Saturday, October 29, 2016, at the Brookings Hospital.  Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Saturday, November 5, 2016, at the Christian Reformed Church in Volga with burial to follow in Trinity Cemetery.  Visitations will be 5-7p.m. Friday at Eidsness Funeral Chapel in Volga.

Gertrude Alice (Schonewill) Meyer was born on March 29, 1925 to Marcus and Helene (Vanden Berg) Schonewill in Volga, SD.

Gertrude grew up in Volga, where she attended grade school and high school. On January 27, 1942, she married Ben Meyer, the love of her life, at her parents' home. Ben and Gertrude farmed northwest of Volga their entire life.

Gertrude was a lifetime member of the Volga Christian Reformed Church. She was involved with church activities, Christian School activities, the Gideon's, and prison ministry. Gertrude worked at Parkview Rest Home for a number of years and then continued volunteering for many years after with music and craft activities.

She was a friend to many and, along with her husband, visited the elderly and shut-ins. She will be remembered most for her wonderful cooking skills. She is known for her delicious gold bricks and pheasant dinners. She loved to crochet and was especially proud of her dolls. One of her greatest joys was spending time with her family and especially loved celebrating their 70 th wedding anniversary.

Gertrude is survived by her children: Gloria (Pete) Tjoelker of Bullard, Texas, Benard (Judy) Meyer of Marne, Michigan, Marcella Denman of Tyler, Texas, Linda (Larry) Vostad of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Barb (Warren) Wiese of Ortonville, Minnesota, Steve Meyer of Volga, South Dakota, and Faye (Ray) Weidenfeller of Ada, Michigan; 22 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; 2 great great-grandchildren; and four sisters: Katherine Meyer, Ruth Meyer, Laura Mans, and Carol Albright. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ben; a son, Dale Meyer; her parents; and three brothers: Edward, Burnette, and Dwayne.
