Gerrit K. Lengkeek, age 89, of Volga, died Wednesday, June 25, 2003, at the United Retirement Center in Brookings, South Dakota. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Saturday, June 28, 2003, at the Volga Christian Reformed Church, with interment in Trinity Cemetery. Visitations will be from 5-8 P.M. Friday at Eidsness Funeral Chapel in Volga and preceding services at the church on Saturday. Gerrit K. Lengkeek was born April 15, 1914, at Volga, South Dakota, to Kryn and Gertie (Meyer) Lengkeek. He attended District No. 76 country school and then began helping on the farm. He purchased his farm in 1937 and resided there until entering the United Retirement Center in Brookings in November 2001. He married Irene DeGroot on June 1, 1939, at Volga. Gerrit enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting, and playing and watching sports. He liked animals, especially dogs. He enjoyed spending time with his friends and family. He served as an elder, deacon, and Sunday school teacher at the Volga Christian Reformed Church, and was active in the Mens Society. He also served as a member of the Volga Christian School board. Survivors include his wife, Irene, of Volga; six children: Gary (Nancy) Lengkeek of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Kathleen (Herm) Meenk of Lynden, Washington, Peggy (Jerry) Baas of Pease, Minnesota, Steve (Carol ) Lengkeek of Wilmington, Delaware, Jonathan (Diane) Lengkeek of Volga, and Henry (Grace) Lengkeek of Zeeland, Michigan; 20 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Johanna and Hilda Lengkeek of Volga and Magdalena IntVeld of Bruce, South Dakota; and a brother, Peter Lengkeek of Spearfish, South Dakota. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Henry; a sister, Gertrude; and an infant sister, Magdalena.
