Genevieve T. Nelson, age 94, formerly of Brookings, died Tuesday, July 17, 2012, at the Good Samaritan Home in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Monday, July 23, 2012, at Ascension Lutheran Church in Brookings. Visitations will precede services at the church. Genevieve Thelma (King) Nelson was born February 11, 1918, near Nunda, South Dakota, to Ray and Emma (Westby) King. She grew up in the Nunda-Rutland area, and attended Rutland High School. On July 8, 1940, she married Howard Shafer at Sioux City, Iowa. They lived in Sioux City until Howard's passing in 1950. Genevieve returned to Rutland, where she cooked at the school. She later moved to Brookings and worked at the F.W. Woolworth Store and the Brookings Clinic. After her retirement, she remained in Brookings until moving to Sioux Falls. Genevieve was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church. She was involved in the quilting group and Circle and other volunteer activities at the church. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family. Survivors include her two daughters: Cheryl Jorgensen of Viborg, and Bonnie Wosje of Sioux Falls; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; three siblings: Betty (Claire) Kahler of Kansas, Shirlee Olson of Nunda, and Bob (Gert) King of Arlington, South Dakota; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers, and a sister.
