Gaylord Gay Benson, age 69, of Volga, died Wednesday, August 4, 2004, at Avera-McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Saturday, August 7, 2004, at First Lutheran Church in Volga, with interment and military graveside rites at Trinity Cemetery at Volga. Visitations will be from 5-8 P.M. Friday at Eidsness Funeral Chapel in Volga Gaylord William Benson was born September 7, 1934, near Volga, South Dakota, to Arthur and Ida (Bjerke) Benson. He attended Volga schools. He served in the U.S. Army from 1957 until 1959. Following his discharge from the Army, he farmed near Volga and drove a milk truck. On December 2, 1961, he married Jean Erickson Pederson at Pipestone, Minnesota. The Bensons lived in Minnesota from 1966 until returning to Volga in 1980. Gay worked at the Volga Co-op for ten years, and he was a machinist for ten years for Hub City. He was currently working at the South Dakota Soybean Producers plant in Volga. Jean died June 28, 2004. Gay was a member of Calvary Presbyterian Church, where he had served as a trustee. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, putting puzzles together, and spending time with his children and grandchildren. Survivors include seven children: Ken (Nila) Pederson of Brewster, Minnesota, Larry Pederson of Brookings, Tom Pederson of Springfield, South Dakota, Deb Judge of Pipestone, Minnesota, Wendi (Jim) Peterson of Volga, Deanna (Kevin) Wilson of Volga, and Eric (Karie) Benson of Volga; 26 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; a brother, George Benson, of Brookings; and a sister, Dorothy Chronister, of Sioux Falls. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and a grandson.
