Garmon A. Hesby, age 93, died Monday, February 16, 2009, at Brookview Manor in Brookings, South Dakota. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Monday, February 23, 2009, at Calvary Orthodox Presbyterian Church in Volga, with interment in the Trinity Cemetery. Visitations will be from 5-7 P.M. Sunday at Eidsness Funeral Chapel in Volga.
Garmon Ansel Hesby was born May 5, 1915, to John and Thora (Jorgensen) Hesby in Pennington County, Minnesota, where his parents had moved from Kingsbury County, South Dakota. He was raised on farms in the Lake Preston and Arlington, South Dakota area.
After graduating from Arlington High School in 1932, he learned butter making while employed at the local Farmers Cooperative Creamery. He met his future wife Beverly Harris, while working in Trimont, Minnesota. They were married May 17, 1941, and lived in Clinton, Minnesota.
Garmon spent his working career in the dairy processing business. In 1953 he was hired as manager of the Volga Farmers Creamery and Produce which merged with Land O Lakes in 1970. He was named South Dakotas Agribusiness man of the year by the Economics Department of S.D.S.U. in 1981, the year of his retirement.
Survivors include his two sons, Gerald (Linda) Hesby of Lake Poinsett and Dr. Joel Hesby of Brookings; two grandchildren, Timothy (Julie) Hesby of Dietrich, Idaho, and Heidi (Kevin) Larson of Sioux Falls; four great-grandchildren, Eric Larson, Emilie Larson, Thea Hesby and Mandi Hesby; and one sister, Pearl Pedersen of Arlington. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Elna Thorsvold; and his beloved wife of 64 years who died in 2005.
