Garfield S. Sando, 87, of Brookings, died Friday, May 9, 2003, at Select Specialty Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, May 14, 2003, at Leganger Lutheran Church in Toronto, South Dakota, with interment in the Toronto Cemetery. Visitations will be from 4-8 P.M. Tuesday at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings and preceding services at the church on Wednesday. Garfield Selmer Sando was born August 28, 1915, at Hills, Minnesota, to Erick and Gunda (Peterson) Sando. He moved with his family to the Toronto area, and attended country school at District No. 60. On October 6, 1935, he married Judith Johnson at Hendricks, Minnesota. The Sandos farmed in the Astoria-Toronto area, and moved to Brookings in October 2002. Garfield was a member of Leganger Lutheran Church in Toronto. He enjoyed fishing. Survivors include his wife, Judith Sando, of Brookings; a son, Robert (Nancy) Sando of Marshall, Minnesota; five grandchildren: Lori Halvorson, Rob Sando, Judy Nietfeld, Sue Thooft, and Tom Sando; twelve great-grandchildren; two sisters: Selma (Harvey) Texley of Brookings, and Gina Trooien of Hendricks, Minnesota; and a sister-in-law, Clara Sando, of Brookings. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Ed Sando.
