Obituary

Frederick C. Westin, age 86, of Brookings, died Wednesday, January 5, 2005, at the Marian Care Residence in St. Paul, Minnesota. Funeral services will be 1:30 P.M. Monday, January 10, 2005, at First Presbyterian Church in Brookings, with interment at the Black Hills National Cemetery. Visitations are from 5-8 P.M. Sunday at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings. Memorials may be directed to the Fred and Wilma Westin Scholarship at the SDSU Foundation. Frederick Charles Westin was born May 10, 1918, at Florence, Wisconsin, to Gust and Helma (Youngquist) Westin. He graduated from Florence High School in 1936 and from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in 1941. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942, attended Navy Midshipmens school at Columbia University in New York, and was commissioned an Ensign. He served during World War II aboard the USS Wildwood (PC 1181) on convoy duty in the Atlantic and Caribbean theaters until he was transferred to the USS Vammen (DE644) serving in the Pacific theater. On March 14, 1945, while on duty, he married Wilma Campbell at Madison, Wisconsin. He was placed in inactive duty in October 1945 in Seattle, Washington. His Navy rank is Lieutenant Commander. After his Naval service, Fred attended graduate school at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and received a Ph.D. in Geology. He also received a Certificate in Air Photo Interpretation in Delft, Holland in 1962. He was a Professor in the Plant Science Department and the Remote Sensing Institute at South Dakota State University for 36 years. Since retiring as an Emeritus Professor in 1983, he has been a consultant with the U.S. geological Survey at the Eros Data Center. He did consulting work for the United Nations and other agencies in Venezuela, Mauritania, Senegal, the Gambia, Botswana, Kenya, Bangladesh, China, and Russia. Fred was a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma XI, and Gamma Sigma Delta. He was a fellow in the American Society of Agronomy. He was a member of the American Legion and the First Presbyterian Church. His hobby, for over 40 years, was making stringed instruments. Survivors include four daughters: Alice (Timothy) Thornton of St. Paul, Minnesota, Margaret Westin (Randall LaFoy) of Birchwood, Minnesota, Janet Westin (Michael McCaw) of Seattle, Washington, and Constance (Douglas) Earl of St. Paul, Minnesota; twelve grandchildren; a brother, Paul Westin, of Augusta, Georgia; and a dear friend, June Ritzen of Nashville, Tennessee. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Wilma on June 29, 1996; a granddaughter, Hannah; and a brother, John.
