Frances Fay Olson, age 85, of Bruce, passed away on Tuesday, June 27, 2023, at the Estelline Nursing and Care Center in Estelline, SD.  Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. on Thursday, July 6th at First Lutheran Church in Volga with burial to follow at the church cemetery.  Visitation will be 5-7 P.M. on Wednesday, July 5th at Eidsness Funeral Chapel in Volga.

Frances was born on April 29, 1938, to Olger and Borgie (Vostad) Granum on a farm south of Volga, SD.  She grew up on the farm and attended country school. Frances fondly remembered coming into Volga on Saturday nights to go to a movie and order popcorn while her parents waited for the movie to be finished.  Frances moved into Volga with her sister during high school, and graduated from Volga High School in 1956.   On May 24, 1956, Frances married Allen Olson in Volga.  The couple moved to California for a short time before returning to a farm south of Bruce.

Frances and Allen raised their family on the farm north of Volga.  After their youngest daughter was born, Frances began working at Land O'Lakes Creamery in Volga.  She then went to work for the Alumni Association at SDSU, where she worked until the time of her retirement.

Frances and Allen loved to bowl, and were involved with both the Arlington and Brookings leagues. She was also a lifelong member of First Lutheran Church in Volga and an Auxiliary member of the Bruce American legion.   Frances truly loved spending time with her extended family and providing large family gathering meals.  She will be remembered for beautiful penmanship, baking, canning, and journaling.

She is lovingly remembered by her children; Steve (Louise) Olson of Jaynesville, WI,   Randal (Char) Olson of Brandon, Nancy Skoglund of Bruce, Curtis (Ronda) Olson of Colman, SueAnn Hesby of Bruce, and Kerri (Nick) Tunge of Sioux Falls; grandchildren, Joshua (Melissa) Olson and Chris (Elizabeth) Olson, Sarah (Andrew) Niemeyer and Seth (Lexie) Olson, Tyler (Danielle) Skoglund, Marisa Skoglund, Allison and Jenna Olson, Kristina (Christopher) Foster, Nickolas Hersrud, Wesley, Quinton, and Cody Hesby, Olivia, Luke, Joseph, and Gwen Tunge; 15 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Vivian, Viola and Janet; and brothers, Sylvan, Carl, Duane, Alvin, and George, who died in infancy; son-in-law, Keith Hesby; and grandson, Bradley Hesby.
