Fayriene Schafer, age 75, of White, passed away, Saturday, November 4, 2017, at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls. Mass of Christian Burial will be 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, November 8, 2017, at St. Paul's Catholic Church in White, SD, with a private family burial in Fairview Cemetery. Visitations will be from 5-7 P.M. Tuesday, November 7, 2017, with a Prayer Service at 7:00 P.M. at Eidsness Funeral Chapel in White.
Fayriene Yule was born on July 29, 1942 in Brookings, SD, the daughter of Don and Verda (Breault) Yule. She attended school in White, SD, and was a graduate of the White High School in 1960. Following her education she lived and worked for one year in Oregon, returning to South Dakota where she was employed at Canova State Bank, United Retirement Center, Town and Country Inn, and Wrights Mushrooms. Fayriene was married to Ronald Haase, and they had two sons, Steven and Bryan. Ronald passed away and she was later united in marriage to Edmund, Schafer in 1974. In 1990, she began working for the White Leader, which changed its name to the Tri-City Star. In 2009, she retired from the newspaper. Ed died on October 13, 2010.
Fayriene was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church. She was active in the community and held many offices including a charter member of the Brookings Area Genealogical Society, White Area Historical Society, Charter member of the VFW Auxiliary, and the White Community Club. She served many years at the White Area Museum as curator. She was also project director of the White History Book and contributed histories in the Brookings County History Book, Our Towns in East Region of South Dakota Book and the Faith, Hope and Tenacity Book. She compiled four family history books and assisted with four additional family books.
Survivors include her children; Steven (Sandy) Haase of Sioux Falls, Bryan (Amy) Haase of Sioux Falls, Jan Campbell of Sioux Falls, Cindy (Larry) Fernholz of Wessington, South Dakota, Douglas (Marge) Schafer of Mobridge, South Dakota, Jon (Kim) Schafer of Sioux Falls, and Darryl (Lisa) Schafer of New Town, North Dakota; 18 grandchildren; 27 1/2 great-grandchildren; and ten great-great-grandchildren; brother, Edward (Kathy) Yule of Florida; an aunt, Mary LaVonne Wellendorf of Iowa; sisters-in-law, Lauretta Petersen of Sioux Falls and Flo Schafer; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, Ronald and Edmund; and one sister, Linda Barnhart. Memorials are preferred to Fairview Cemetery or the White Area Historical Society.
