Obituary

Evelyn R. Platt, age 91, of Brookings, died Thursday, May 5, 2016, at the Brookings Hospital. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, May 9, 2016, at First Lutheran Church in Brookings, with interment in the church cemetery. Visitations will be from 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings, with a family service at 7:00 p.m.

Evelyn R. (Myers) Wallum Platt was born October 21, 1924, at Omaha, Nebraska, to Herman and Virginia (Mellin) Myers. She received her education in St. Louis, Missouri, Chicago, Illinois, Nashville, Tennessee, Sterling, Illinois, and Omaha where she graduated from high school in 1943. She married Jarvis Dale Wallum on October 5, 1946, in Omaha. They lived in Omaha for three years before moving to Manchester, South Dakota, and later to DeSmet where they lived for 33 years. Evie was self-employed as a senior consultant for Mary Kay Cosmetics, Inc. for many years. She operated the Crème Freeze in DeSmet and Willow Lake for eight years, and Teen Town in DeSmet for three years. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on April 26, 2016.

Jarvis died in 1979. On December 21, 1985, Evie married Harold Platt; they lived in Brookings and were married for 30 years. Harold died June 12, 2015.

Evie was a member of First Lutheran Church in Brookings, the Order of the Eastern Star, Elks Does for two years, State Art Museum Guild, and the Brookings Hospital Auxiliary. She was a past member of the American Lutheran Church in DeSmet and the ELCA church circle. She enjoyed dancing, scrapbooking, travelling, and especially spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include her children, Betty (Andy) Vincent of Lake Preston, South Dakota, Steve Wallum of Laramie, Wyoming, and Greg (Chris) Wallum of Lexington, Kentucky; a daughter-in-law, Rhonda Wallum, of Tea, South Dakota; her step-children, Larry Platt of Elizabeth, New Jersey, Jim Platt of Ft. Madison, Iowa, Linda (Larry) Mitchell of Toronto, South Dakota, Richard (Nancy) Platt of Brookings, and David (Lisa) Platt of Norwood, Colorado; 22 grandchildren; and 42 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Jarvis Wallum and Harold Platt; a son, Jeff Wallum; and two grandchildren.
