Obituary

Eunice Gottschalk, age 83, of Brookings, died Monday, May 24, 2004, at the United Retirement Center in Brookings. Memorial services will be held 10:00 A.M. Saturday, June 26, 2004, at First Lutheran Church in Brookings. Eunice Faye (Packernigg) Gottschalk was born October 8, 1920, at Bowdle, South Dakota, to Frank and Elsie (Keen) Packernigg. She grew up in Bowdle, and graduated from high school there in 1938. She graduated from Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen in 1940, and taught elementary school in Roslyn and Eureka, South Dakota, until 1942. On May 16, 1942, she married Oliver A. Gottschalk of Roslyn, South Dakota. He was a fighter pilot in the Pacific Theater, Army Air Corps. During World War II, the Gottschalks lived in Vincennes, Indiana, and Boise, Idaho, where Oliver was a flight instructor after his year in the South Pacific. After World War II, they lived in Lake Preston, where they operated a Red Owl grocery store. They moved to Brookings, where Oliver was in insurance and real estate. They moved to Sarasota, Florida, in 1978. Oliver died in May 1990. Eunice returned to Brookings in 1996. Eunice was a member of First Lutheran Church in Brookings, Faith Lutheran Church in Sarasota, the Order of the Eastern Star, Bridge Club, and various other community organizations. Her special interests included interior design, homemaking, bridge and dinner groups, and family activities. Survivors include a daughter, Marcia Reisetter, of Sioux Falls; a son, Mark (Rebecca) Gottschalk of Eden Prairie, MN; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a daughter, Maureen Larson; a brother, William Packernigg; and a sister, Mildred Estwick.
