Eugene A. Skovlund, age 40, of Bruce, South Dakota, died Monday, September 13, 2004, at Brookview Manor in Brookings, South Dakota. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Thursday at Grace Lutheran Church in Bruce, with interment in St. Petri Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-7 P.M. Wednesday at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings. Eugene Alden Skovlund was born May 31, 1964 in Brookings, South Dakota to Alden and Carol (Ulvestad) Skovlund. He was baptized and confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church in Bruce, South Dakota. Gene graduated from Sioux Valley High School in Volga, South Dakota in 1982 and graduated from Lake Area Vo-Tech in Watertown, South Dakota in 1985 with a degree in computer technology. Gene entered the Air Force in January 1987 at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas. He trained as an Information Systems Control Specialist at Keesler Air Force Base in Mississippi. Gene was then stationed at Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. He served two years at Hess Oldendorf, Germany. He visited Berlin after the wall came down and even chipped off pieces as souvenirs. While in Europe he visited many places including Holland, France, and Austria. After Germany he was stationed at McClellan Air Force Base in Sacramento, California. He remained there until his retirement in 1994, when a traumatic injury rendered him disabled. Gene was transferred to the VA Hospital in Sioux Falls, in April, 1994 and was transferred to Brookview Manor in April, 1995. Gene enjoyed camping, hiking, skiing, fishing, and ice skating. He is survived by his parents, Alden and Carol Skovlund of Bruce, South Dakota; a sister, Deb (Dan) Musilek of Wewela, South Dakota; two nephews: Joshua and Drew; several aunts, uncles, and cousins; and a special friend, Beth Bodnar of Indiana. He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents, three aunts, and four uncles.
