Ethel S. Mannerud, age 98, of Brookings, died Wednesday, June 26, 2013, at Avera-McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, July 1, 2013, at First Lutheran Church in Brookings, with interment in the church cemetery. Visitations will be from 4-6 p.m. Sunday at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings. Ethel (Ross) Mannerud was born January 13, 1915, near Havana, North Dakota, to Archibald P. and Esther (Kreisel) Ross. She grew up in Big Stone and Traverse Counties in Minnesota and attended school at Graceville. She worked at Brown's Valley, Minnesota, where she met Ralph "Doc" Mannerud. On August 21, 1940, they were married at Spirit Lake, Iowa. They moved to Volga where Doc and his brother Erwin started Mannerud Construction Company. Ethel assisted in the operation of the company. They built a home in Brookings in 1949, where Ethel has resided since. Doc died November 13, 1991. Ethel was a member of First Lutheran Church in Brookings, Benevolent and Protective Order of Does, and Brookings Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing cards, especially bridge; reading; and knitting. She enjoyed children and watching birds. Survivors include her son Jim (Linda) Mannerud, of Brookings; a grandson, Mike Mannerud, of Brookings; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; brothers, Clinton, Orman, Gene, and an infant brother, Orin; and two sisters, Muriel Trebil and Doris Rich.
