Ethel M. Knutson, age 91, of Brookings, died Tuesday, November 24, 2009, at Brookview Manor in Brookings. Funeral services will be 1:30 P.M. Saturday, November 28, 2009, at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings, with interment in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitations will be from 5-7 P.M. Friday at Eidsness Funeral Home.
Ethel Margaret (Scheusner) Knutson was born July 15, 1918, to George and Helena (Ricklefs) Scheusner. She married Kenneth Knutson on March 23, 1941, at Rock Rapids, Iowa. Following their marriage, the Knutsons moved to Brookings County, South Dakota, where they farmed west of Brookings. Kenneth died November 24, 1982.
Ethel was a member of the Sioux Valley Extension Club, Sons of Norway, Circle and Swing Square Dance Club, First Lutheran Church and Circle. She liked to travel, and she and Kenneth spent several winters in Texas. She did beautiful embroidery work, was a wonderful cook, and had a real touch for baking pies, breads, and cookies. She had many beautiful flowers and liked to garden, canning many fruits and vegetables. Ethel loved family gatherings and spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Survivors include her three children: Patricia (Duane) Shuck of Lenexa, Kansas, David (Sandy) Knutson of Brookings, and Peggy (Lyle) Johnson of Brookings; 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild: Todd, Barb, Ashley, Tyler Shuck of Lenexa, Kansas; Mike Shuck and Kelly Shuck, Jeff, Anna, and Chase Shuck, all of Overland Park, Kansas; Debra and Dale Michael, Brittnee and Joshua, of Amiret, Minnesota; Kelli and Jimmy Blair and Jimmy III of Cumming, Georgia; Mary Jo and Karl Pepperman and Zachary and Jessica of Volga, South Dakota; David Jr. and Jennifer Knutson and Hayden, and David Paul and Brooke of Volga; Robert and Christy Knutson and Carson and Riley of South Bend, Oregon; Ryan and Tammy Schiller and Tyge and Jaxton and Bowden of Volga; Steven Johnson of Brookings; Stephanie and Tony Sowder, Isabel and Noah of Lake Crystal, Minnesota; and a sister, Helen, of Idaho. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Kenneth; brothers, Lloyd, Willis, and Elmer; and sister, Lois.
